City

Chengdu

China. Chengdu is the capital of Sichuan province and the panda capital of the world. But beyond the cute bears, it's a UNESCO City of Gastronomy famous for its fiery hotpot and relaxed lifestyle. Locals say, 'Once you come to Chengdu, you never want to leave'—mostly because you're too full to move.

When to go: Spring or Autumn

March-June and September-November are best. The weather is mild.

Summer is hot and humid. Winter is cold and damp (no central heating in many places). Avoid Chinese National Holidays (early Oct, late Jan/early Feb) when crowds are insane.

  • Spring/Autumn: Comfortable weather.
  • Summer: Hot and spicy (literally).
  • Winter: Damp and grey.

Getting there: Tianfu or Shuangliu

Chengdu has two airports: Tianfu (TFU) is the new, massive one far from the city (1+ hour by metro/highway). Shuangliu (CTU) is closer.

The Metro connects both airports to the city. Taxis/Didi are also available but check which airport you are flying into!

  • Tianfu (TFU): Far, use Metro Line 18.
  • Shuangliu (CTU): Closer, Metro Line 10.
  • Didi (Chinese Uber): Convenient app.

Where to stay: Near Chunxi Road

Stay near Chunxi Road or Tianfu Square for the most central location, shopping, and metro access. This is the heart of the city.

The area near Wuhou Shrine is also good for a more cultural vibe.

  • Chunxi Road: Shopping, central, busy.
  • Tianfu Square: The absolute center.
  • Wuhou: Historic and Tibetan quarter nearby.

What to see: Pandas and Parks

The Panda Base is #1. Go at 7:30 AM when they open to see the pandas active and eating breakfast. By 10 AM, they are asleep.

People's Park is essential for tea culture. Watch locals play mahjong, get their ears cleaned (yes, really), and drink jasmine tea. Visit the Wuhou Shrine and Jinli Ancient Street for history and snacks.

  • Panda Base: Cute overload.
  • People's Park: Local life and tea.
  • Jinli Street: Snacks and souvenirs (touristy but fun).
  • Leshan Giant Buddha: Day trip to see the massive statue.

Street food is everywhere. Don't be afraid to try things, but maybe start with 'mild' spice.

  • Hotpot: The signature dish.
  • Mapo Tofu: Spicy and soft.
  • Kung Pao Chicken: The original version.
  • Rabbit Head: A local delicacy (for the brave).

Getting around: Metro

The Chengdu Metro is excellent, clean, and has English signs. It goes everywhere.

Didi (ride-hailing app) is cheap and easy if you have the app set up. Taxis are also fine.

  • Metro: Best way to travel.
  • Didi: Cheap and convenient.
  • Bike Share: Good for short trips.
