Halifax

Canada. Halifax is the heart of the Maritimes. It's a historic port city with a massive star-shaped Citadel, a vibrant waterfront boardwalk, and a pub culture that rivals Ireland. It's friendly, foggy, and famous for its maritime hospitality and unique late-night snack, the Donair.

When to go: Summer or Fall

Summer (July-August) is peak season. The weather is warm, patios are open, and festivals are on.

  • Summer: Best weather.
  • Fall: Nice vibes.
  • Winter: Storm watching.

Getting there: Bus or Shuttle

Halifax Stanfield International Airport (YHZ) is far from the city (35 mins). The MetroX 320 bus is cheap ($4.25) and takes you downtown.

Food: Donair and Lobster

You must eat a Halifax Donair: spicy meat, tomatoes, onions, and sweet white sauce on a pita. It's messy and legendary (try King of Donair).

Seafood is everywhere—lobster rolls, chowder, and fish & chips. The Seaport Farmers' Market is great for local treats.

  • Donair: The official food of Halifax.
  • Lobster Roll: Fresh and buttery.
  • Oysters: Local and salty.
  • Alexander Keith's: The local beer.

Getting around: Walk and Ferry

Downtown is very walkable (but hilly). The ferry to Dartmouth is part of the transit system and offers great skyline views.

You need a car to get to Peggy's Cove or Lunenburg.

  • Walk: Hilly but compact.
  • Ferry: Scenic and cheap.
  • Car: Essential for day trips.

Halifax is reasonably priced compared to Toronto or Vancouver. Seafood can be pricey, but pub food is affordable.

Many attractions like the Public Gardens and Boardwalk are free.

FAQ

Is the noon gun real?

Yes. Every day at 12:00 PM (except Christmas), a cannon is fired from the Citadel. Locals check their watches; tourists jump.

Can I walk on the black rocks at Peggy's Cove?

NO. Stay off the black rocks. The waves are unpredictable and people are swept out to sea every year. Stay on the dry white rocks.

What is the sweet sauce?

Donair sauce. It's made of condensed milk, vinegar, garlic, and sugar. It sounds weird, but it works.
